The table compares the percentages of people aged 65 and over in different regions in 2000 and projections for 2050.

Overall, all regions are expected to experience significant ageing, with Europe remaining the oldest region, while Africa continues to have the youngest population. The global average is projected to almost double over the period.

In 2000, Europe had the highest proportion of elderly people at 22%, followed by Asia (12%) and both North America and Oceania (11%). Latin America and Africa recorded much lower figures at 7% and 5% respectively, while the global average stood at 13%.

By 2050, all regions are predicted to see substantial increases. Europe is expected to rise to 31%, maintaining its lead, while Asia and North America will also grow markedly to 28% and 26% respectively. Oceania and Latin America are projected to reach 22% and 18%, whereas Africa will increase more modestly to 12%. Meanwhile, the worldwide proportion is forecast to climb to 24%.
