The tables compare the total population of New York City and the distribution of residents between Manhattan and the other districts in 1800, 1900 and 2000.

Overall, the city’s population grew dramatically over time, while Manhattan’s share declined substantially as the outer districts became increasingly dominant.

In 1800, New York City had a relatively small population of 79,216, the vast majority of whom lived in Manhattan (60,515, or 76%), whereas only 18,701 people (24%) resided in the other districts. By 1900, the total population had surged to 3,437,202. Although Manhattan’s population rose significantly to 1,850,093, its proportion fell to 54%, while the combined population of the other districts increased sharply to 1,587,019, accounting for 46%.

By 2000, the city’s population had more than doubled again to just over 8 million. However, Manhattan’s population declined to 1,538,096, representing only 19% of the total. In contrast, the other districts experienced substantial growth, reaching 6,471,089 and making up a dominant 81% of the population.
