The three pie charts illustrate the proportions of students taking four types of courses—face-to-face, correspondence, mixed media, and online—in 1984, 1994 and 2004.

Overall, face-to-face courses were the dominant mode at the beginning of the period but declined steadily over time, while mixed media courses rose significantly to become the most popular by 2004. Meanwhile, online learning emerged only in 1994 and remained a relatively small segment, and correspondence courses showed a slight downward trend.

In 1984, traditional face-to-face courses accounted for a substantial majority at 67%. Correspondence courses made up 20%, while mixed media courses represented a smaller share at 13%. There was no participation in online courses at this point.

By 1994, the proportion of face-to-face learning had fallen to 54%, although it still remained the largest category. Mixed media courses increased modestly to 15%, matching the share of correspondence courses, which stayed unchanged at 20%. Notably, online courses appeared for the first time, accounting for 11% of all enrolments.

In 2004, the trend shifted further. Face-to-face courses declined sharply to 40%, while mixed media courses rose markedly to 35%, becoming nearly as popular as traditional learning. Correspondence courses decreased slightly to 15%, and online courses remained relatively limited at 10%, showing only marginal change since 1994.
