The diagrams compare the layouts of a typical Japanese office and a typical American office.

Overall, the Japanese office is more open and hierarchical, with managers positioned among employees, whereas the American office is more segmented, with separate rooms for different functions and greater privacy.

In the Japanese office, the department manager sits at the front facing the staff, while two section managers are placed among groups of employees. Workers are seated in clusters in an open-plan arrangement, and there are no separate rooms, creating a more collective working environment.

In contrast, the American office is divided into distinct areas. Shared facilities such as a copy room, storage, and conference rooms are located on one side, while managers have their own private offices on the other. Employees sit in small workstation groups in the centre, separated by partitions. This layout emphasises individual space and clearly defined roles compared to the more integrated Japanese design.
