The diagrams compare the layout of a traditional Japanese house with that of a modern Japanese house, showing both downstairs and upstairs areas.

Overall, the modern house has been redesigned to provide more permanent and specialised rooms, replacing the flexible, multi-purpose spaces of the traditional layout. There is also a clearer separation of functions, particularly with the addition of multiple bedrooms and bathrooms.

In the traditional house, the ground floor consisted mainly of a kitchen and a bathroom, alongside a tatami room (Room 1\) that served as a sleeping area at night using futons stored in a cupboard. Upstairs, there were two similar tatami rooms (Rooms 2 and 3), both used flexibly for sleeping and living purposes, with storage spaces provided by cupboards.

In contrast, the modern house has a more structured design. On the ground floor, the main living area has been converted into a combined living and dining space, while the kitchen remains in a similar position. The use of tatami flooring and futons is reduced, reflecting a shift towards Western-style living.

Upstairs, the modern layout includes three separate bedrooms, including a main bedroom and two smaller bedrooms. Additionally, two bathrooms have been installed, significantly increasing convenience compared to the single bathroom in the traditional house. Overall, the changes highlight a move from flexible, minimalistic living to a more compartmentalised and comfort-oriented design.
