The line graph compares the percentage of internet users in four countries—Japan, the US, China and India—between 1996 and 2001\.

Overall, China experienced a dramatic increase and became the leading country by the end of the period, whereas Japan showed a gradual decline. The US fluctuated moderately, while India rose steadily from a very low base.

In 1996, Japan had by far the highest proportion of users at 26%, followed by the US at 11%. China and India were significantly lower, at 2% and 1% respectively. Over the next two years, Japan’s figure fell steadily to 18% in 1998, while the US fluctuated, dipping to 8% in 1997 before recovering to 11% in 1998\. Meanwhile, China increased gradually to 5%, and India remained unchanged at 1%.

From 1999 onwards, China’s growth accelerated sharply, rising from 11% in 1999 to 25% in 2000 and reaching 28% in 2001, overtaking all other countries. In contrast, Japan declined slightly to 17% and then stabilised. The US dropped to 5% in 2000 before recovering modestly to 7% in the final year. India, on the other hand, climbed steadily to 7% in 2000, before falling slightly to 5% in 2001\.
