The line graph compares the value of four types of investment funds—property, fine art, gold and company shares—in the US between 1988 and 2014, measured in millions of dollars.

Overall, all four investment categories showed an upward trend over time, although gold and fine art were more volatile. Gold experienced the most dramatic growth and ended as the highest-value asset, while property increased steadily but remained the least valuable throughout the period.

In the early years, gold was already relatively high at around $90 million in 1988 and rose slightly to about $100 million in 1990 before dropping sharply to roughly $50 million in 1992\. It then recovered and fluctuated moderately until 2006, after which it surged significantly, peaking at approximately $450 million in 2012 before falling to around $380 million in 2014\.

Company shares showed a strong and consistent upward trend. Starting at about $30 million in 1988, they rose sharply to $150 million in 1994 and continued to increase steadily, reaching approximately $250 million by the end of the period.

Fine art displayed considerable fluctuations. It rose from around $65 million in 1988 to about $80 million in 1990, then dropped to roughly $40 million in 1998\. After that, it increased sharply, reaching around $175 million in 2004, before dipping again and then climbing significantly to approximately $330 million in 2014\.

Property, in contrast, followed a gradual and stable upward trend. Beginning at about $50 million in 1988, it increased steadily over time, reaching nearly $200 million by 2014, with only minor fluctuations along the way.
