The bar chart shows the number of international applicants from China, Japan, the USA and Russia to universities in a European country between 2004 and 2008.

Overall, applications from the USA and Japan increased steadily over the period, while those from China declined. Russia remained the smallest contributor, with only slight growth.

In 2004, China had by far the highest number of applicants at 27,000, followed by the USA at 13,000. Japan accounted for 7,000, and Russia had the lowest figure at 2,500. However, Chinese applications fell consistently each year, dropping to 15,500 by 2008.

In contrast, the USA saw a strong upward trend, rising from 13,000 in 2004 to 27,000 in 2008, overtaking China to become the largest source of applicants. Japan also experienced gradual growth, increasing from 7,000 to 10,000 over the same period.

Russia showed only minor fluctuations, dipping slightly to 2,000 in 2005 before climbing to 3,000 in 2008.
