Overall, car ownership increased over the period. The percentage of households without a car declined steadily, while ownership of one car became the dominant category. Households with multiple cars also grew, though more moderately.

In 1971, the largest group consisted of households with no car at 45%, compared to 35% owning one car and 25% having more than two cars. By 1981, one-car households had overtaken the others, rising to 43%, while those without a car fell to 40%. The figure for multiple-car ownership also increased to 35%.

This trend continued in 1991, with one-car households climbing slightly to 38%, while the proportion without a car declined further to 35%. The percentage of households owning more than two cars dropped back to 25%, indicating a temporary fluctuation.

By 2001, the shift was more pronounced. A majority of households owned one car (52%), while those without a car decreased significantly to 25%. Meanwhile, households with more than two cars rose to 38%, reaching their highest level.
