The bar chart compares spending by 18–20-year-olds on five product categories in 2010 and 2014.

Overall, food and clothes accounted for the largest shares of expenditure in both years, while books received the least. Spending increased in most categories over time, with the notable exception of books, which saw a sharp decline.

In 2010, young people spent the most on food at 3,700 million, followed by clothes at 2,500 million. Smartphones and toiletries accounted for 2,000 million and 1,900 million, respectively, while books were the least purchased category at 1,000 million.

By 2014, expenditure on food rose significantly to 4,300 million, remaining the highest figure. Spending on smartphones also increased markedly, from 2,000 million to 2,700 million, making it the third-largest category. Toiletries saw a slight rise to 2,000 million, while clothes decreased marginally to 2,450 million.

In contrast, spending on books dropped considerably to just 500 million, representing the most substantial change across all categories. Overall, the data suggests a shift in priorities, with greater spending on technology and essentials, and reduced interest in books.
