Prepositions

Làm chủ các giới từ thông dụng và cụm giới từ hay gặp trong IELTS Writing & Reading.

1. GIỚI TỪ CHỈ THỜI GIAN: IN / ON / AT

QUY TẮC NHỚ: Thời gian càng LỚN thì dùng IN; thời điểm càng CỤ THỂ thì dùng AT
IN + năm (in 2024)
tháng (in January)
mùa (in summer)
thập kỷ (in the 1990s)
thế kỷ (in the 21st century)
IN + buổi trong ngày: in the morning / in the afternoon / in the evening
ON + ngày cụ thể (on 15 March)
thứ (on Monday)
ngày lễ (on Christmas Day)
ngày đặc biệt (on my birthday)
ON + ngày + buổi: on a Monday morning / on a cold winter evening (thêm tính từ mô tả → dùng ON)
AT + giờ cụ thể (at 7: 30)
thời điểm (at noon / at midnight / at dawn / at dusk)
AT + dịp lễ nói chung: at Christmas / at Easter / at Tet / at the weekend (BrE)

Dùng IN (khoảng thời gian rộng)
Dùng ON (cụ thể mức ngày)
Dùng AT (rất cụ thể)

Ghi chú

⚠ LƯU Ý: "in time" (kịp giờ, không bị muộn) KHÁC với "on time" (đúng giờ theo lịch). The bus arrived ON TIME. / She arrived just IN TIME for the meeting.

2. GIỚI TỪ CHỈ ĐỊA ĐIỂM: IN / ON / AT

Quy tắc: IN = bên trong khu vực
ON = trên bề mặt
AT = tại điểm cụ thể
IN + khu vực có ranh giới: in a city / in a room / in a building / in a country / in the world
IN + phía/hướng: in the north of England / in downtown / in the centre of the city
ON + bề mặt ngang: on the table / on the floor / on the shelf (tiếp xúc với bề mặt)
ON + bề mặt dọc: on the wall / on the screen / on the board / on the door
ON + phương tiện (bên trong và trên): on the bus / on the train / on the plane / on a ship
ON + tầng lầu: on the 3rd floor
ON + trang sách: on page 47
AT + địa chỉ cụ thể: at 25 Baker Street / at this address
AT + nơi hoạt động: work at a hospital / study at university / eat at a restaurant
AT + điểm gặp gỡ: at the airport / at the station / at the bus stop / at the corner of...

3. FOR / SINCE / DURING / WHILE — PHÂN BIỆT QUAN TRỌNG

FOR + KHOẢNG thời gian
SINCE + MỐC thời gian
for three years (khoảng 3 năm)
since 2020 (từ năm 2020)
for two months (khoảng 2 tháng)
since she graduated (từ khi tốt nghiệp)
for a long time
since last Monday
Dùng với NHIỀU thì khác nhau
CHỈ dùng với PERFECT tense
for + số + đơn vị thời gian
since + thời điểm cụ thể

DURING + DANH TỪ (noun)

WHILE + MỆNH ĐỀ (S + V)	during the conference	while she was speaking
during the summer / during the war	while they were having lunch	during his internship
while working (cùng chủ ngữ, rút gọn)	KHÔNG: during she was working	KHÔNG: during the conference (khi muốn dùng clause)

Ghi chú

⚠ LƯU Ý: FOR vs SINCE: "She has worked here FOR three years." (khoảng) / "She has worked here SINCE 2021." (mốc). Cả hai dùng với Present Perfect nhưng khác hoàn toàn về cấu trúc!
